On a double-volume stairwell, above a wide slider, or across a multi-blind wall of glass, a chain simply isn't practical — motorisation is. Rechargeable battery motors retrofit into an existing home with no wiring; wired 220V motors suit a new build or a full renovation, and carry heavier, bigger systems without a second thought.
Control layers can be as simple or as involved as you like: a single remote for every blind in a room, an app so you can check from the office whether the west blinds are still up, or a full schedule so bedroom blinds lift with sunrise and the west wall drops itself at three in summer.
No dangling chains. No one has to remember. The blind just knows what time it is.
The safety-critical layer is the wind sensor on anything outdoors — a folding-arm awning or an exterior screen that retracts itself automatically before a highveld thunderstorm gets going, whether or not anyone's home to notice the sky changing.
Practical notes
- Battery motors need a periodic recharge — we say so plainly at the quote stage, not after installation.
- Multi-channel remotes group blinds by room or by elevation, so one button really does mean one button.
- Motorised operation is the most child-safe option there is — nothing corded to reach.
- Quality motors carry multi-year guarantees and run quietly, though never completely silently.

ProductRoller shutters
Shading, not security. Our roller shutters take the sun, the heat and the glare on the outside face of the glass. A security-rated shutter is a different product, and we can quote that separately if you want it.
Motorisation up the ridge
Double-volume glass and a stairwell out of reach aren't a Houghton-only problem — we wire and programme the same motorised systems on Westcliff's terraced stands, in Saxonwold's tall-ceilinged wings, and into the renovations going up in Forest Town and Parktown North.
